I've fallen behind in reporting my viewing. I especially want to mention the British TV mini-series of Mary Webster's 1984 best-seller "The Camomile Lawn." Mainly about the amorous relations of a group of men and women liberated by the social upset of World War II, it begins with the last family reunion at a house with a camomile lawn on the Cornish coast in August 1939, told in flashbacks triggered by a funeral some 25-30 years later. We get to see Jennifer Ehle in full frontal nudity as the gold-digger Calypso just three years before she would play Elizabeth Bennet. How's that for versitility. The older Calypso is played by her real mother, Rosemary Harris. Ten-year-old Rebecca Hall stole my heart as Sophy, the youngest of the family (ten years later she would be stealing a lot of other hearts as Vicky in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"). Grown-up Sophy is played by Claire Bloom. The flighty mother of the family is played by another of my favorite actresses, Felicity Kendal. No great depth, but an enjoyable series. I should also mention a couple of films with higher aspirations, both with large elements of fantasy. "The Illusionist" starring Edward Norton, more than strains credulity, but the special effets are impressive. Federico Fellini's "Juliet of the Spritis" is a wild romp about something. I was constantly engaged but have no idea what it was about. Afterwards, I read Roger Ebert's intelligent analysis, which made more sense than the movie did. It's one of those films that if you missed the credits you would still immediately know who made it.
